Every cup carries a passport.

We trace every bag back to the village, the cooperative, and the price we paid the grower — stamped in the Route Ledger, not buried in a brochure.

A burlap sack packed with freshly roasted coffee beans, ready to ship from origin
A barista pouring hot water over a paper filter in a glass Chemex, steam rising

From village to cup, nothing goes unnamed.

Most bags say “Product of Ethiopia” and stop there. Ours name the cooperative, the elevation, the harvest month, and the exact price per pound we paid — because a grower's name belongs on the label as much as ours does.

Beyond the bag

A cafe built like a good market square

A quarter of every lot's margin goes back to the village it came from. The rest of the cafe is just a room we try to keep worth lingering in.

  • Living-wage guarantee

We contract at least 20% above the Fair Trade floor price, written into every purchase agreement.

  • Literacy Fund

Three reading rooms funded in Yirgacheffe since 2019, stocked with books in Amharic and English.

  • Caravan Sessions

First Thursday of every month: pull an instrument off the communal shelf and play with whoever else showed up.

Questions we get at the counter

How fresh is the coffee when it ships?
We roast to order and ship within 48 hours of roasting, always with the roast date printed on the ledger card inside the bag.
Can I subscribe to the Route Ledger?
Yes — the subscription rotates through our three current lots, ships every two weeks, and you can cancel or swap lots any time by email.
Do you carry decaf?
A water-processed Colombian decaf is available by request at the counter and by email order; it isn't part of the rotating Route Ledger lots.
Where is the cafe, and when are you open?
4th & Hawthorne, Portland, Oregon. Open 7am–7pm daily, with Caravan Sessions running until 9pm on the first Thursday of the month.
